Various facilities on the island were built including a penitentiary, almshouse, city hospital, the New York Lunatic Asylum, and the Smallpox Hospital. The Lighthouse was designed by James Renwick, Jr., architect of the Smallpox Hospital and the Smithsonian Institute Moses 2022 Preservation Project Award, the 2020 Rehabilitation Award from the Friends of the Upper East Side Historic Districts, and a 2024 Excellence in Historic Preservation Award from the Preservation Leauge of NYS
